Waiheke Island, surrounded by water is New Zealand's most clearly defined appellation. Waiheke enjoys a drier, sunnier and warmer micro-climate than Auckland City. A soil composition of Waitamat clay results in reduced vigour of the vines, and increased concentration in the fruit's flavours. Over the last decade, numerous boutique wineries have been established and found international fame.

The emphasis is on quality, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot of prime importance. Other varieties, including Syrah, Mourvedre, and Chardonnay have been planted in recent years, but the Bordeaux varietals, including Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, are the way for this prosperous wine growing region.
